The week draws to a close
Aug. 5th, 2005 08:42 pmSo I finish my second day with Edenvale. No overtime again, and not called in for the weekend. I might be back on Monday but it's unknown at this point.
Work was good. I wasn't on scrubbing duty this time (yay!) though I still got filthy (boo!) but not nearly as bad (yay!). The day was actually very relaxed and low-key for the most part. I was working with another guy, and we were working on cleaning large numbers of metal objects.
So we just washed them off, right? Wrong. We did things the high tech way! I started low-tech... using a mop to quickly swab down the walls (not floor) of a large metal container (about 15ft x 6ft) with a disinfectant to kill the odour from whatever was in there before. Then we got to work. There were a couple portable sink setups... but these were sinks of the future!
The main basin held copious amounts of water, but had another fancy feature... ultrasonic wave generators! This set up ultrasonic waves (the same used in ultrasounds on pregnant women) in the water, making it vibrate. The feeling on your hand when you immersed it was hard to describe. And you could HEAR it in your ears, as the vibrations were conducted up the bones in your body. Very cool.
So what we did was dip the metal in the vibrating tub and hold it there. The ultrasound literally shook all the dirt off them for us! Then we rinsed it off in demineralized, deionized water (which leaves absolutely zero residue when it evaporates, unlike normal water) and put them in the aforementioned container to dry (with a dehumidifier and some blowers).
Pretty simple, except that the hunks of metal we were working with were full of very expensive moulded metal fittings. Supervisor said something along the lines of "Worth about thirty five thousand dollars". So yeah. It's also good to note that the moulds were on large metal plates, and the whole thing weighed 70-100 lbs (varied). So they were a pain to handle. One or two guys (the stronger ones) handled the washing and rinsing up in the warehouse, and then passed them down from the loading bay to me and another girl, and we stacked them in the container to dry.
It wasn't bad... we got to stand around a lot and get paid for it, so I wasn't bitching. And then at quarter to lunch, disaster struck!
*insert ominous drum roll here*
I was going to put one of the moulds down and tried to slip my hand out from under the edge before it landed, as I had done a dozen times before.
Not quite fast enough this time - the tip of my middle finger got caught and SLAMMED. Hurt like a bloodybitchfuck too it did! I informed the supervisor about it, who sent me off to see the first aid attendant, mostly for formalities sake. Neither of us thought it was serious, and by that point most of the pain had faded. But best to get an official pronouncement of "it's fine". So I did. She said it looked fine, but I'd probably get a nasty looking blood blister. I was then sent off for an early lunch with a cold compress to keep on my finger. Didn't even get a blood blister after all.
After lunch, I got to help haul around styrofoam objects... polar bears, a 10ft giant fat penguin, roman pillars and Canada geese. Had to load them in a truck to take to a container. Yay. And then some more ultrasonic cleaning. That was about it.
Again, not sore (except for my finger). Just dirty. Very very dirty. I could handle more of this, easily.
In other news, I got paid today. Twice! How did you manage that, you ask? Simple.
Target is nice. They pay weekly - every Friday - for the work you do in the previous week. So for the work week of the 1st to 5th (for instance), you submit your timesheets by the next tuesday (9th) and you get paid the next Friday (12th).
If you don't pick up your cheque at the office on Friday, they will mail it out to you on the next Monday. Except this week it was Tuesday (because monday was a holiday). So last weeks cheque arrived in today's mail. I wouldn't have been able to pick up this week's cheque because the office would be closed by the time I got there, but luck was with me. One of the girls working got sick (probably from fumes) and so one of the people from Target drove out to pick her up and take her home (they're good that way). She also brought out a few people's paycheques with them, mine included.
Yay me! Nice points: Since my income level is so damned low, there are almost zero deductions off my pay. In fact, the only deduction is for EI, and that's a whole 1.95% of gross pay. Or, in understandable terms...
Over those 2 weeks I worked 29.5 regular hours and 2.75 overtime hours, making $9 an hour. Pretty pisspoor total hours for 2 weeks, but I'm still getting warmed up.
My gross pay for that period was $312.28. My total deductions were only $6.13. So yeah... fairly decent, and I'm making more net than I expected.

And WOW on the deductions. I wish I got that much net out of my paychecks. >_<
(For comparison, last week I made about $500, and got about $400 of it)

Date: 2005-08-05 09:37 pm (UTC)I was honestly expecting a lot more deductions, so it was surprising.
Finger is fine, really. Why not kiss something else of a similar shape?

Maybe add in some really florid prose.
*snugs*
