A first for work today. I've been asked back tomorrow. Of course, going by what one of the girls said, they would ask a narcoleptic monkey back.
Anyhow, I'm out in Cloverdale (ie buttfuck nowhere) doing fire restoration cleaning with Edenvale. Yes, cleaning. It's a warehouse that had a fire, and we're cleaning it up and doing restoration.
This is the lightest work I've had yet. I'm only a teensy bit sore, no more than if I had spent the day shopping. 95% of the day was taken up with one extremely obnoxious job. There was a large roller track... thingy. You know, with all the rolling pipes, makes things roll down it. Not a conveyer, exactly. yeah, one of those things.
Anyhow, it was big. A good 5 feet wide and over 100 feet long. There was a team of 6 of us who had to wash the whole damn thing by hand. We had to get the rollers, the frame, the underside of the frame, etc etc. It had to be wiped down and scrubbed, and then scrubbed again with soap, dried off, certain bits had to be wiped shiny, and then the whole thing was wiped down in WD-40 and covered in plastic.
There were 6 of us doing this for almost the entire day, and a few others helping at times. It took us nearly 7 hours. Yeah, after we finished all we did was some cleanup and that was it. It was dirty. We had blue rubber gloves. I'd put on a new pair, and get scrubbing. The gloves would be pure BLACK within 5 minutes. Caked on soot will do that.
There was bending, but it wasn't that bad. I came out of today with minimal soreness... a bit of back, that's all. Breaks are LONG. Our coffee breaks were at least half an hour each, lunch was over an hour... insane.
The worksite is LOUD. Earplugs are an absolute must. It's also a hazard zone - hardhats required all the time. Bloody thing is an oven and makes my head sweat like mad. Worse than that, it still feels like I'm wearing the damn thing!
was talking to one of the girls there and apparently there's about 2 weeks left on the job... she's already been there 2 weeks. She also said "they aren't going to let you go. They're desperate for labour." which is why I mentioned the monkey. But it's steady for the near future and tolerable.
I start at 8am, which means up and about by 6. Joy. Probably overtime tomorrow. We were supposed to stay till 7 tonight but they decided against it at the last minute.
Now I'm going to make brownies.

Date: 2005-08-05 01:07 am (UTC)I thought you were supposed to go two by two with those.
Oooh... brownies.
Could you email one to me?(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-05 04:34 am (UTC)Yes brownies. Going in my lunch! Woo!
Sure thing!*I haven't had enough sleep because I looked up bus schedules to get back to work (I had gotten a ride there yesterday) and it turns out I have to leave over half an hour earlier than expected. The one bus route that goes there only runs hourly in the morning (as compared to every 20 minutes in the evening). So I get to work at 7:20 when I start at 8:00. Joy. Rapture.

Date: 2005-08-05 05:33 am (UTC)I'm very bad about watching things in general, and especially bad about watching things on the computer (too many distractions RIGHT THERE).
So while I am doing my duty and making an effort towards learning of this "Firefly" thing... it may take a fair amount of time to actually accomplish.
I beg thy patience in this matter :)

Date: 2005-08-05 08:00 pm (UTC)Or how about the fact I own about 110 movies as it is... and have only watched 35 of them.
Yup, I suck at watching things. But I shall make an effort, in order to please you.
Encouragement, eh? I see the active side is overruling your apathy today.

Date: 2005-08-05 05:15 am (UTC)The other choices I had on Wednesday night (when I called to ask what they had for Thursday) included two different jobs (which would have been one-day things) unloading shipping containers, which I passed on because I'm not that strong yet. I can't lift and carry more than about 25lbs for more than a few steps.
Or there was more fish plant work, but working on chipping ice and such, she said. She said that high speed was essential however, and I am not a fast person.

Date: 2005-08-05 09:27 am (UTC)I've been thinking: remember Humiliation? From like, aeons ago? We should start an LJ community to play a game. I never really got to participate and I wanted to. And since I'm HORRIBLE at explaining it, WE should start a game.
Eh?

Date: 2005-08-05 05:06 pm (UTC)Last summer I was doing similar work, temp placements in factories. I thought Baskin Robbins would be fun. It wasn't. It was cold and loud and sticky. Blech.
