Another day, another fist full of dollars
Aug. 12th, 2005 11:09 pmSlept in yesterday. Badly. Must stop doing that, bad for the budget. But I think I needed it. My right leg still hurt for the entire day, and most of today as well.
Called Target last night, got placement for today. Yay! Placement was in Port Coquitlam. Double yay! Looked up directions and maps. Maps (Mapquest, Google, MSN) couldn't agree on where the address actually was, so I got suspicious. Decided to leave one bus early in case I got lost. VERY good plan.
Despite the fact the site was only a 20 minute bus ride and short walk awat, I still left here at 6:35 to catch the 6:50 bus. Got off at 7:10, and it was very good I took the early bus.
This is where I was supposed to be going.
My bus dropped me off on Kingsway Ave next to Broadway, which is that street running vertically that has Industrial Ave connected to it.
So I walk down Broadway. Industrial Ave? Nowhere to be seen. Does not exist along that street. So, on a hunch, I walk all the way down to Mary Hill (the lower yellow road), which is a freeway. And I start walking along it. On the paved shoulder. Facing oncoming traffic. That was fun. Walked to Coast Meridian (the vertical-running street to the right on the map) and walked up it.
Lo and behold! Industrial Ave IS a dead-end street, and it IS at the place it's shown on the map. Except that it's connected to COAST MERIDIAN and not Broadway! Lovely.
I arrive at work at 7:45am. That's right, all my walking around looking for this place took me 35 minutes. In my steel toed boots. Good thing I took one bus early.
After that, the day improved markedly. Canstar does restoration work, so I was cleaning again. But today was better for several reasons.
First was that we had to drive out to the job site, which was down in Vancouver. And that was on the clock. So I got paid to sit in a van talking to the two other people I was with for an hour. We got to the site, and the work was EASY today.
We were doing "Final Clean". In english, the situation was that the apartment had some flood damage. All the real work had been done on restoration, and the last people out of there were the construction workers. They left it pretty tidy, but dirty and VERY dusty.
So I spent half the day with a duster and damp cloth, cleaning off all the mouldings and baseboards. Jillian (the other temp who was with me) got to clean the bathroom, the blinds and windex the glass. That took us a whopping, oh... 3 hours? Yeah. 3 hours of wiping walls and dusting. HARD WORK. Riiiight.
By this time, the cube van had arrived with the furniture and contents of the apartment, and mover-type guys were hauling it up. I had run out of work, so I was detailed to help with the moving in. The regulars handled all the heavy stuff and furniture. I just carried up boxes and light things like single chairs. It was rather nice. Worked up a sweat because it was hot and humid and poorly ventilated, but the work wasn't hard.
Ended the day by unpacking most of the boxes for the owner... and then another paid 1 hour drive back!
Got in my 8 hours, and then managed to hitch a ride with Jillian (who I was working with) and her husband Tom (whom I had met in Cloverdale the week before) to the Skytrain. Made it to Target, turned in my time sheets, and got my paycheque.
Had more overtime than I remembered. $266 pay for only 3 days work last week was niiiiiiice. So I hit the mall to do some shopping. Got new work gloves as I was doing a number on the ones I already had. Got some cheap tshirts (I really need more than 4 shirts). Had KFC for dinner. Went home, nice shower, then hopped online.
VERY good day indeed. Tomorrow munchkinface, and Monday back to work. Yay.
