Sooooooooo.... I barter with the ex for a new comp. Just a comp... no HDD, no monitor, no keyboard/etc. Case, cd, mobo, ram... the basics. I get it in exchange for a couple nights free babysitting. Go me!
It's better than the ancient piece of rusted iron I was using... a Duron 750 with 224 megs of ram vs the P2-350 with 192 megs.
The big difference, hopefully, will be the video performance of this one.
Now... the problem? I took my hard drive and stuck it in this one. Windows will see all the new hardware, update drivers, all will be well. I've done this before umpteen times, no sweat.
Not this time. Can't find AGP. Can't find Video Adaptor. Can't find MODEM. What do I need? The drivers for the modem and the mobo.
Do I have them? No. Could I download them? Yes... except I
can't use the modem! and before you ask about my old one, it's an ISA modem and the new mobo doesn't have an ISA slot.
So I give up and try putting the hard drive back in the old comp. Nope. Not working. Windows has gotten too buggered up to recognize the old hardware.
So on BOTH machines I'm stuck with VXD errors, no modem, and the worst of all... 640x480 resolution with 16 colors. No, not 16 bit. 16 colors. 4 bit. Less colors than the old NES.
Eventually (24 hours after getting the comp) I have a brainstorm. Old 2 gig hard drive + old comp + clean new install of windows = MODEM.
So... does that work? Kinda. Fucking IE crashed every 5 minutes... made it VERY hard to download anything. Too me 8 (count em, EIGHT) reboots (with an average of 3 crashes per reboot) before I got the modem drivers... I managed this by bookmarking EVERY SINGLE PAGE ALONG THE WAY.
So then... I praise that decidedly PC holdover of nearly-useless-except-when-it's-lifesaving hardware. The 3.5" floppy disk drive.
Swap out case. Replug all the cables. Reboot the new machine. Reinstall the modem with the new WORKING DRIVERS!
Yay! Now I can get online, and eventually download all the other needed drivers (video and sound). And now I have me a working 'puter!
And on top of that, I *finally* managed to talk to
yuffers earlier tonight... we'll see how things go tomorrow morning.
And now, testing Diablo 2 to see if it runs any better.
